Son of Claus Spreckels, a penniless immigrant from Hanover, Germany. He had three brothers, John, Claus (Jr.) and Rudolph. Adolph and Claus Jr. & Sr. feuded with the youngest two over control of family businesses.
Adolph and wife Alma hired Ecole de beaux arts-trained architect George Appelgarth to design this impressive urban estate on Washington Street in Pacific Heights, completed in 1912.
